Tariffs on U.S. origin chickpeas and lentils at 77% and 55%, respectively.
As of June 16, the government of India imposed new tariffs on 28 U.S. products, including chickpeas and lentils. These measures were originally conceived in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on Indian steel and aluminum, but their implementation had been delayed in the hopes that the two countries would sort out their differences. When the U.S. revoked India’s preferential trade status earlier this month, however, India let these tariffs take effect. Sources indicate that shipments with bills of lading dated prior to June 16 will not be affected.
The USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council (USADPLC) reacted quickly to the news and requested that U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue appeal to the government of India to honor sales contracts signed before June 16. In May, the USADPLC hosted a trade team from India. The visit resulted in the sale of more than 25,000 MT of U.S.-origin pulses for shipment starting in mid-June.
