China’s growing import diversity opens opportunities for pulse suppliers

Zhou outlined the structural changes underway in China’s economy, pointing to continued growth in manufacturing and high-tech industries, the expansion of services and evolving patterns of domestic consumption. He also highlighted the strength of China’s foreign trade, with imports growing faster than exports in the first seven months of the year and the range of imported products and origins continuing to expand.

For pulses, Zhou sees significant potential in China’s growing interest in dietary diversity, protein intake and balanced nutrition, noting that even niche market segments can represent meaningful opportunities within such a large consumer base. He also stressed China’s commitment to greater openness and more stable, transparent and predictable international trade, pointing to exhibitions, e-commerce and other platforms designed to connect overseas suppliers with Chinese buyers.
