Future of Food

At a glance

The 5th annual World Pulses Day is just around the corner on February 10 2023, meaning it’s time to start celebrating!

World Pulses Day across the world

In celebration of this year’s theme, GPC President Cindy Brown will be delivering speeches at various events across the world. You can tune into the official UN Food & Agriculture Organization World Pulses Day event via this link and watch key players from around the world discuss the importance of pulses in our food systems.

You can also join us live at the GPC’s World Pulses Day event in London on February 8, in participation with GAFTA, at which President Brown will be speaking alongside Jaine Chisholm Caunt OBE and Arthur Potts Dawson from the World Food Program.

‘Sustainable food for a sustainable future’

With the war in Ukraine wreaking havoc across global food systems, it’s more important than ever that we have a nutritious, affordable, environmentally friendly food source on which to rely in times of need. Pulses are inherently capable of meeting all our food security and nutrition needs and it’s time for them to take their place as a key player in future food systems.

As ever at GPC, we are committed to ensuring the free and open trade of pulses across the world to ensure global populations have access to a sustainable food source. Our food systems are only as strong as the sum of their parts and it’s integral that every link in the supply chain is supported and reinforced as we move forward into a future that threatens to be plagued by climate disasters and economic instability.

Together in support of Ukraine

On February 9, GPC will host a World Pulses Day event at the port of Gdynia, Poland, a key port in the transport of Ukrainian pulses since the outbreak of the war. In collaboration with the Ukraine Pulse Association, we’ll be holding a press event to highlight the importance of peace, both for our friends in Ukraine and for the rest of the world suffering as a result of the war. This event will not be hybrid.

Get involved

It’s not too late to organize a World Pulses Day event! Whether online or offline, big or small, you can do your bit to bring people together and raise awareness about the power of pulses! Plus, it’s a great excuse to prepare your favorite pulse-based dish and share it with friends and family.

The UN FAO has also created a whole host of resources, available in several languages, to help you spread the word in your online community, which you can find here. Don’t forget to use the hashtags #WorldPulsesDay and #LovePulses for a healthy diet and planet.
