Shyam Narsaria of Arvee International offers an update on the seedings for Myanmar’s most important pulse cycle. He talks black matpe, a good year for green mung, and how India’s import duty is good news for the pigeon pea trade.
With prices nearly 30% higher than black matpe, Myanmar farmers are favoring mung bean seedings this season.
“The main crop of mung bean seedings is starting now. We’ll see planting over the next seven days, then we can expect to harvest at the end of January or the first week of February. Estimates for that crop, which is the largest of four crops harvested over the year, are between 500 KMT-600 KMT.”
“Black matpe is planted at the same time, in more or less the same fields. The conditions required by each crop are similar, but the crop cycle lasts 90 days for black matpe as opposed to 70-75 days for green mung bean. Last year, we had a record production of around 1 MMT – so production was already very high. I don't foresee a big jump in black matpe, in fact, there may be a little less. We could see between 900 KMT-1 MMT.”
