At a glance

  • Myanmar’s main mung bean crop is now being seeded, with estimates of 500–600 KMT expected for harvest early next year.
  • Black matpe production remains strong at around 1 MMT, though a slight decrease is likely after last year’s record output.
  • High mung prices and favorable weather are set to shape Myanmar’s pulse balance this season — with pigeon pea acreage also on the rise.

With prices nearly 30% higher than black matpe, Myanmar farmers are favoring mung bean seedings this season.

1. The largest of Myanmar’s mung crops starts seeding this week

“The main crop of mung bean seedings is starting now. We’ll see planting over the next seven days, then we can expect to harvest at the end of January or the first week of February. Estimates for that crop, which is the largest of four crops harvested over the year, are between 500 KMT-600 KMT.”

2. Black matpe production is high; a rise in acres is unlikely

“Black matpe is planted at the same time, in more or less the same fields. The conditions required by each crop are similar, but the crop cycle lasts 90 days for black matpe as opposed to 70-75 days for green mung bean. Last year, we had a record production of around 1 MMT – so production was already very high. I don't foresee a big jump in black matpe, in fact, there may be a little less. We could see between 900 KMT-1 MMT.”

Despite softer prices this year, Myanmar has already exported around 700 KMT of black matpe — most of it to India.
