Columbia Grain CEO Jeff Van Pevenage breaks down the season’s key trends: resilient Montana lentils, softer pea trade with India and China, and steady gains for chickpeas.
Lentil yields are coming in strong across Montana, Washington, and Idaho, with Montana potentially heading for one of its biggest crops yet.
“One of the potential game changers in the pulse business is the increase in size and quality of pea production in Russia – they've got a good pea crop coming and will fulfill needs in China and India, so the US and Canada are going to struggle for a place to put their peas.”
US chickpeas are set for expansion: a 10-15% production increase is anticipated this year, helped by late rains in Montana.
