India has unveiled its ambitious plan to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses, marking one of the most significant interventions in the sector in recent years. The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, approved by the Union Cabinet in the first week of October 2025, will run from 2025–26 to 2030–31 with a financial outlay of 11,440 rupees crore. Here’s all you need to know.
Tur (pigeon pea) — among the three pulses guaranteed 100% procurement — anchors India’s latest push for self-reliance.
According to the official statement by the Government of India, the mission aims to expand pulses production to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030–31, covering 310 lakh hectares with an average yield of 1,130 kg per hectare. About two crore farmers are expected to benefit through the provision of improved seed varieties, post-harvest infrastructure, and assured procurement mechanisms. The plan also includes the distribution of 126 lakh quintals of certified seeds and 88 lakh free seed kits, and the establishment of 1,000 processing units to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance value addition.
