Highlights from the month

  • 5% GST implemented for pre-packaged pulses 25 Kg, as of July 18.
  • Farmers prefer to sow paddy, sugarcane and mustard seeds over pulses.
  • As of July 15, rains were satisfactory. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, heavy rains fell in a short span of time.
  • Pulses sowing is up from last year; mung and urad areas increased while pigeon pea decreased.


Pricing

Prices of almost all pulses improved due to decreased sowing, high import parity and lower stocks at port. 


Pigeon Pea

  • Domestic prices lower than imported prices, resulting in less trade and lower stocks at ports.
  • Prices improved in the main markets by 110-150 Rs./quinal.
  • Imports from April-June expected to be 79,349 MT, up significantly from 38,502 MT last year.

Lentil

  • International prices under pressure as the new Canada crop will be harvested soon.
  • Domestic prices also under pressure due to low local demand.
  • Lentil imports from April-June expected to be 1,05,971 MT, up from 79,575 MT last year.
     

Urad

  • Prices decreased in the first week of July but started to increase again in the second week.
  • Imports for April-June are expected to be 74,391 MT as compared to 77,674 MT last year.

Mung

  • Registration for the summer crop started in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
  • Farmers are holding stocks and waiting for procurement as prices are still under the MSP.
  • Prices increased by Rs. 100-200. after the procurement declaration.
  • Mung imports are still restricted.

Chana

  • Prices increased in all markets due to increased local demand for chickpea flour.
  • Arrivals in markets are reducing.
  • Benchmark prices for Delhi, Rajasthan and MP chana were unable to touch the sentimental level of Rs. 5,000/quintal however, in many Maharashatra markets, chana traded at above the Rs. 5,000 level.


Sowing
 

  • Overall pulses sowing reached 9.39 MMT compared to 8.7 MMT last year.
  • Pigeon pea sowing decreased to 2.58 MMT from 3.158 MMT last year.
  • Mung sowing increased to 2.02 MMT from 1.585 MMT last year. Sowing in Rajasthan alone increased to 1.28 MMT from 0.73 MMT.
  • Urad sowing increased from 1.563 MMT to 1.81 MMT.
