Maisam Ali looks at market data and talks to traders to get the lowdown on the spike in Pakistan’s mung bean imports in 2024 and the first half of this year.
Pakistan has long been nearly self-sufficient in mung beans, producing enough to meet almost all of its domestic needs. Between 2017 and 2023, the country’s mung bean output averaged around 140,000–150,000 tons a year against consumption of roughly 150,000 tons. Imports over that period were minimal, about 15,000 tons annually. Yet, in 2024, Pakistan’s mung bean imports jumped unexpectedly to around 49,000 tons, more than three times the long-term average. Trade data indicates that this strong pace continued into early 2025, raising questions about what drove the sharp rise.
