Origins of the Kenyan pigeon pea export increase

In October 2024, the CGIAR estimated annual Kenyan pigeon pea production at 107,117 MT, taking an average of the last three years. The lentil-like pulse is consumed widely in the country, a fact which may have limited exports in the past. Another key obstacle to expanding exports was a lack of a market. Then, last year, India removed restrictions on non-LDC (Least Developed Country) countries, giving Kenyan traders a green light to use the trade route that many of its LDC neighbours – Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi – had been taking advantage of for many years previously.
