The global green lentil market appears to be moving toward a season of oversupply, with expanding production in key origins adding to carryover stocks. Current indicators suggest that the 2025–26 cycle may leave exporters grappling with excess volumes — and tighter margins.
A mix of economic and agronomic factors is driving green lentil planting decisions, even when price risk is apparent.
At GPC Pulses 25 conference in May, Chuck Penner of Leftfield Commodity Research forecast Canada’s 2025 green lentil crop at 842,000 tonnes. Only three months later, updated estimates as of August 2025 suggest Canadian production could reach 1.15 million tonnes — up 65% from last year’s 700,000 tonnes, and 37% higher than the May forecast.
