Argentina 2024 bean harvest update/
CLERA reports on the “worst harvest since 2013”

At a glance

A “complete failure”

  • “After a season characterized by a very significant lack of rain during the entire crop cycle, and having harvested approximately 85% of the area in northern Argentina, we can be sure that the crop will result in a complete failure.”
  • “This will surely be the worst harvest since 2013, when we practically lost all production.”

Weather impact

  • “Several consecutive and early frosts during mid-May caused severe damage in more than 80% of the area and direct extreme damage to a big part of the crop that was planted at a later date (from the first quarter of March onwards).”
  • “This situation has an effect mainly on the alubia beans, cranberries and other red types.”
  • “In black beans, due to their geographical distribution and sowing date, the damage would not have produced so many losses.”
  • “Additionally, frosts have caused significant losses during processing and result in inferior quality goods.”

Yield breakdown

  • “The resulting yields are very uneven, with plots of 300-400 kg/ha and others of 600-700 kg/ha. We consider that the average estimate will be around 500 kg/ha.”
  • “In blacks the yields are closer to the average of previous years.”
  • “The progress of harvest and these results lead us to estimate that Argentina will not be able to probably exceed 40,000MT of alubias as an exportable balance.”
  • “In cranberries and red beans, reductions of at least 50% are expected compared to previous years.”
  • “Regarding black beans, volumes are expected to be similar to last year.”
